Important Scuba Gear – Scuba Mask Care Tips
We have already mentioned an important piece of scuba gear that all self respecting divers should have and that is the scuba mask. And like all other diving equipment that anybody interested in scuba activities should know and do, the scuba mask must be well taken care of in order to keep it in excellent working condition for a long time. It may not be the most expensive piece of scuba gear that you might end up buying, but it is certainly one of the most crucial since you might literally be lost underwater without it. And you might make the whole situation worse if you do maintain it well and then experience serious problems that might affect your safety when you are off in the ocean during a diving vacation, particularly if you happen to be alone.
Making sure you keep your scuba mask in good condition will also save you a lot of money down the road, in terms of not having to resort to buying new scuba gear to replace the older ones which have become unusable. This might mean having to spend slightly more at the beginning to buy a slightly less cheaper mask for example, but one that you can use for a much longer time compared to a less reliable piece. With more technology being used to create better quality products over time, you will also realize that masks might not cost as much nowadays unlike in the past.
As with any important gear that you use during a scuba diving trip, the mask will require regular and proper cleaning. Make sure it is cleaned at least before the trip, so that it is disinfected properly before use to avoid any bacteria or harmful germs to accumulate when not in use, which could lead you to suffer illnesses or unwanted health conditions when it is used when diving. This is also the same approach to use for other scuba gear that is in your collection. There are different types of cleaning material that you can use for the process, but make sure they do not cause unwanted residual damage to the mask, such as scratches or oily traces.
Many scuba diving beginners experience a common problem with their scuba masks, and that is that they encounter fogging very frequently when they go underwater. There might be many causes to fogging of the mask, but it is more important to know how to prevent them. This means understanding the various situations that might lead to this phenomenon. One of the first things to keep in mind is right after you purchase your mask, to clean it totally of the residues left behind by the sticky labels, such as a product label being plastered on the mask. When peeling them off, you will get either a sticky gum texture, liquid silicone or even oily substances, which you must use proper cleaning liquids to remove. Make sure that this is done, otherwise it will not only lead to fogging, but also in extreme cases, the scuba mask becomes unusable as it does not stick to you well.
Cleaning your scuba mask will be half of the battle won in keeping them spick and span and reliable for a long while. The other half will be knowing how to protect and keep them safely stored without getting them damaged unwillingly or unknowingly. Do not leave your mask lying around without putting them in a tight protective case that will ensure that no one leaves their oily marks behind on it, nor will it get scratched if it is dropped or knocked again. The best protective cases for scuba masks must fit them well with little or no leftover space which might defeat the purpose of keeping it scratch free when moved about. There are many cheap cases available and if you can get them for your other scuba diving equipment, then one for your mask should be of little issue.
